The Blue Spotted Ray was originally described by Swedish naturalist Peter Forsskal in 1775. Despite sharing a genus with the Marble Ray, some scientists believe it may be more closely related to the freshwater stingrays of the Amazon River. The Blue Spotted Ray is a near-threatened species, largely due to the destruction of its coral reef habitat. It is also collected for aquariums, although it does not do very well in captivity.
